Welcome to Costa Rica Coral Restoration! We are a non-profit founded in 2019 with the goal of restoring, protecting, and repopulating the coral population at Marino Ballena National Park in Bahía Ballena, Costa Rica.
Over the last four years, we have built coral nurseries at the Marino Ballena National Park, artificial reefs, and fragmentation tanks to help restore the coral population at Marino Ballena and the surrounding area.
Our work involves a multi-faceted approach to restore and protect the coral reef. Costa Rica Coral Restoration’s initiatives are focused on the fragmentation of the corals for propagation, , as well as education and research.
El Niño is here and Costa Rica is experiencing a large scale intense bleaching event. Moving as quickly as possible to preserve the fragile genetics of our reef, we recently stopped planting out coral back to the oceans and are focusing on growing coral in our laboratory coral tanks. It is vital that we enlarge our lab to establish more tanks in order to preserve these precious corals.
Educating tourists visiting the National Park, along with local families, about the importance of protecting the coral reefs is also a critical component of our mission. Collaborating with other institutions, NGOs, non-profits, and foundations; working together Costa Rica Coral Restoration’s ultimate goal is to promote research on the current state of the coral at Marino Ballena.
